Australian Blackworms’ new site converts 1 in 10 visitors

The Australian Blackworms site hit a staggering 11.3% conversion rate a month after launch.

Challenges

Australian Blackworms were ready to migrate to Shopify. Their old site had been designed almost ten years prior and was causing all kinds of headaches for customers and their own team. When they contacted us, they expressed these challenges:

  • Their site was heavily outdated and didn’t do their brand justice
  • Poor UX resulted in large volume of manual enquiries for the team to deal with
  • Simple content or design changes took weeks to implement
  • Sales and traffic growth had ground to a halt

Goals

Australian Blackworms were drowning in manual processes to make up for what the website couldn’t do. They wanted to automate as much manual work as possible to provide room for growing online sales. After years of hearing customer complaints about the website, the Australian Blackworms team also had these goals for their site redevelopment:

  • Move the site from Volusion to Shopify
  • Redesign the site to look clean and simple
  • Fix a handful of the long-term issues making life difficult for customers
  • Drive new sales and boost conversion rate

How did it play out?

The project started with a fairly extensive roadmap. It had been years since the ABW team had the freedom to even think about their website could do to help grow the business.

The roadmap painted a series of objectives; create a stylish design, allow customers to sign up for a monthly product subscription, and extend shipping options, just to name a few.

These features were wrapped into a new design created in Figma that was also used to collaborate on the look and feel of the new site.

Finally, the design was built as completely custom theme so every part of the content and design could be edited without developer help.

What's next for Australian Blackworm?

The new ABW site is consistently achieving a 9%+ conversion rate, and finding new ways to monetise the existing customer base, like a monthly subscription service.

While sales are growing month-on-month, pushing for hard growth was never the most important goal for the team. Rather, they were looking to reduce the amount of overhead required to keep the website running.

This vision has already become a reality, but with Shopify’s extensive network of plugins and apps, they’re finding new ways to automate processes that have been handled manually for years.
