The Problem
The Gladstone Chiropractic Clinic team have been managing their clients and team from a legacy Visual Basic application that is over 10 years old. In that time, technology has come a long way.
The system has accumulated a large backlog of “wish list” items that couldn’t practically be built because the underpinning language was simply too old and unsupported. This list included things like responsive design that looks good on mobile, access from computers that don’t have the client installed, and an integrated calendar for managing their appointments.
The solution
The new system had a few unique requirements. Firstly, it needed to be able to operate offline for periods of time when the internet was not available. Secondly, it needed to be lightning-quick to replicate the feel of the legacy desktop system. Finally, because it handled medical data, all storage needed to be onsite.
After flirting with the idea of a monolithic setup, we decided a decoupled Laravel + Vue.js progressive web application was the right choice. It ticked all the boxes and also allowed the complications of the frontend calendar to be separated from the sophistication of the patient management business logic.
The outcome
The new system has a tidy calendar that drives everything. Patients book appointments over the phone and are scheduled immediately.
They receive a customizable SMS message in the lead-up to the appointment. When they arrive, their remaining details are filled into the system.
When the appointment finishes, they settle their bill and their record is consolidated.
At the end of the week, the administrative team have all the financial information they need to balance the books.
